Euronext to Acquire Nasdaq's Nordic Power Futures Business

Following Nord Pool and Euronext’s plans to launch a Nordic and Baltic power futures market, Euronext, Nord Pool’s majority owner, has announced plans to acquire Nasdaq’s Nordic power futures business, pending regulatory approvals.

Open positions in Nasdaq’s Nordic power derivatives will move to Euronext Clearing, once approved by members. Power futures trading will be managed from Euronext Amsterdam and cleared through Euronext Clearing. Transaction completion is expected by Q4 2025, with a smooth transition planned for the first half of 2026.

Congratulations to the Baltic Region

The team at Nord Pool was pleased to see the recent successful desynchronization of the Baltic region from the legacy Russian power grid - with smooth synchronization, after testing by the relevant Transmission System Operators, into the central European infrastructure.

Our Market Manager Baltics, Ingrid Arus, comments: "As the exchange for simple, efficient and secure power trading in the region, we were watching bidding behaviour and prices very closely during the desynchronization period and afterwards. I am delighted to say that everything appears to have gone very well, with the market correctly reflecting prevailing conditions."

Moving Forward with Fallback Procedures

The most recent day-ahead market decoupling incident (June 2024) threw a spotlight on current market fallback procedures, designed to ensure the production of a reliable power price.

After close consultation with customers and other energy sector stakeholders, Nord Pool is pleased to share some concrete proposals on potential improvements to fallback procedures which would - we believe - make the production of a robust power price far more likely amidst the confusion often seen in a decoupling scenario.

In addition we look at the appropriateness - or otherwise - of local auctions being run by a decoupled power exchange.

2024 Trading Figures Announced

Nord Pool has announced its trading figures for 2024, with strong growth in evidence across our markets.

The year saw a total of 1150 TWh of power traded through Nord Pool, of which day-ahead trading on our Nordic, Baltic, UK and Western and Central European markets, accounted for 1036 TWh. Intraday trading volumes for 2024 amounted to 114 TWh across Europe (an increase of more than 50% on 2023 figures).

Tom Darell, CEO at Nord Pool, said: "Continued volume growth in almost all markets during 2024, as well as increased uptake of our data products and expansion of our serviced markets, speaks to the on-going trust and confidence our customers place in Nord Pool. This reminds us that we must continue to deliver the simple, efficient and secure power trading on which those customers rely."

SDAC Market Coupling - Join the Meeting

The Market Coupling Consultation Group (MCCG) meeting dedicated to considering the SDAC 15 minutes MTU changes, takes place on Friday 14th February, from 10:00 - 12:00 CET.

Last Hour Intraday Changes

Implementation of the Electricity Market Design reform means Europe now operates under a single price signal across all electricity markets during the last hour of intraday trading, where permitted.

This is a game-changer for countries like Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Finland where, previously, intraday liquidity was restricted to local markets during final hour trading.

The order book for the last hour of trading is now shared by all power exchanges, meaning:

Enhanced market efficiency
Greater transparency
Expanded trading opportunities

15-minute Trading for Baltic Market

Nord Pool, in partnership with the relevant transmission system operators, has successfully transitioned the Baltic region to 15-minute intraday trading intervals - the shift being successfully implemented with the first intraday auctions on Monday 16 December (Tuesday 17 December for continuous trading).

The transition from the traditional 60-minute, to the new 15-minute, trading intervals aims to improve market efficiency and to better integrate the increasingly important renewable energy element of the power trading mix.

Nord Pool was pleased to work closely with the transmission system operators of the three Baltic countries: Estonia’s Elering, Latvia’s JSC Augstsprieguma tīkls (AST), and Lithuania’s Litgrid, to implement this important trading transition.

France Meets Finland

Earlier this month, Nord Pool was pleased to have a number of our team members attending a fascinating conference jointly hosted by the French Embassy in Finland and the Economic Services of the French Nordic Embassies.

The team was delighted to engage with 30 key stakeholders from the Finnish energy industry and key French companies active in Finland.

Our Chief Strategy Officer, Julien Cossé, delivered an insightful presentation on Nord Pool's role in cross-border power trading, 30 years of European market integration and the importance of the European electricity market in energy transition.

EPAD Up and Running

Nord Pool is delighted that Statnett's Electricity Price Area Differentials (EPAD) futures contract auctions successfully launched earlier this month.

The new auctions, which see Statnett buying and selling monthly, quarterly and calendar EPAD contracts on three borders (NO1/NO2, NO1/NO5, NO3/NO4), will take place biweekly, according to the published auction calendar. Nord Pool won the tender to run them earlier this year and has pulled out all the stops to ensure the EPAD auctions could be delivered on time.

The auctions will provide important hedging opportunities for market participants in Norway and will actively support the liquidity of the Nordic derivatives market.

BRM Goes Live!

Nord Pool is delighted that the independent Romanian power exchange BRM, supported by experts from our dedicated Serviced Power Markets team, has successfully launched trading as part of SDAC, the day-ahead auction which couples Europe.

We have been working closely with the team at BRM for the past two years, sharing our expertise to help them establish efficient, simple, secure and transparent day-ahead and intraday power markets. It is great to finally see all that hard work from everybody involved, pay off - bringing increased efficiency and competition to Europe's electricity market.

Nordic Flow-Based Launched

At the end of October, the Nordic Single Day-Ahead Coupling market successfully began using a flow-based grid model. The process of delivering Nordic flow-based trading began with the TSOs more than a decade ago, with Nord Pool and other power exchanges also working to ensure delivery in more recent years.

We recognise that this is a significant change which may raise questions for customers - if you need more information on Nordic flow-based trading, please contact your market manager.

To assist customers with the transition to the Nord Pool market data API, we have decided to extend support for Nord Pool's Market Data SFTP/FTP until 1 February 2025. Complete close-down will take place on 31 March 2025.

Baltic Region SIDC 15-minute MTU

Go-live date for the SIDC 15-minute Market Time Unit (MTU) in Baltic bidding zones has been pushed back, to avoid a clash with the rollback period of the SDAC Nordic Flow-based market.

The revised timeline sees Thursday 21 November as the first delivery date for which Nord Pool will offer SIDC 15-minute MTU trading, for Estonia (EE), Lithuania (LT) and Latvia (LV).

Nominated Electricity Market Operators, Transmission System Operators and members of the CACM association will hold the seventh Market Coupling Consultation Group meeting on Friday 8 November 2024 (9:00-12:30 CEST).

Nordic Flow Based - Go-live confirmed

The Nordic Flow Based Day Ahead Market Coupling project parties have confirmed that final tests were successful, and the project will go live on Tuesday 29 October 2024 (first trading day for delivery 30 October).

SDAC Survey

The MCSC NEMOs and TSOs, in collaboration with ENTSO-E, are undertaking an informal survey to gather feedback on potential use of co-optimized balancing capacity and energy products in the SDAC. The consultation period runs until Tuesday 5 November 2024.

Committed to Power Futures

Nord Pool has announced that we will launch, together with Euronext, a dedicated Nordic and Baltic power derivatives market.

Euronext Nord Pool Power Futures will be traded on Euronext’s Optiq® trading platform and cleared by Euronext Clearing. The launch of Euronext Nord Pool Power Futures will aim to answer the need expressed by the market to have a long-standing, sustainable market infrastructure committed to developing secure power futures trading in the Nordic and Baltic regions, with a strong Nordic foundation. Customer testing will begin as early as March 2025.

Nordic Flow Based - Ready to Go-Live

The Nordic Flow Based Day Ahead Market Coupling project parties have stated that – subject to successful completion of final tests - the project will go live on Tuesday 29 October 2024 (first trading day for delivery 30 October).

Market Data - API Changes Soon

Endpoints related to Nord Pool Market Data API v1 will be removed on Tuesday October 1, as we are no longer providing support for this version. Users must migrate to the latest version to avoid service disruptions.

Our new API v2 consolidates multiple endpoints into one and introduces new API endpoints providing curve data for countries as well as contract statistics or total intraday statistics for a given date and bidding zone. Intraday Delayed and Hub to Hub Capacities APIs are not affected.

Don't Forget - Last Hour Intraday

Since July 2024, all NEMOs (power markets) have been obliged under European law to share orders in the SIDC shared order book in the last hour of intraday trading. This law change affects key European markets, including Germany/Luxembourg, Austria, Belgium, France and The Netherlands.

Nord Pool Wins EPAD Tender

Nord Pool has won a tender from Statnett, the Norwegian energy transmission system operator, to run its EPAD (Electricity Price Area Differentials) futures contract auctions.

The new auctions will see Statnett buying and selling monthly, quarterly and calendar capacity contracts on three borders (NO1/NO2, NO1/NO5, NO3/NO4). They will take place twice a month, with the aim of commencing at the end of 2024.

Commenting on the tender success, Tom Darell, CEO at Nord Pool, said: “We are pleased to be able to provide the unique experience and expertise in auction organization and market design that will allow Statnett to deliver a simple, secure and liquid EPAD auction market for Norway.

Genex and Nord Pool launch Georgian power market

Nord Pool and the Georgian Energy Exchange JSC. (GENEX) have announced the successful launch of Georgia’s first day-ahead and intraday power trading market.

The go-live of the market, which opened and recorded its first trade last month, is the result of a cooperation agreement - with Nord Pool providing GENEX with key power trading systems.

Welcoming new EU law on intraday orders

The obligation on NEMOs to share their intraday orders up to delivery in key European markets took effect on Tuesday 16 July.

At Nord Pool we welcome the new EU law establishing the extended shared order book, making it possible for all European power exchanges to offer customers the same liquidity from the beginning to the end of intraday trading, in all bidding zones.

Tom Darell, CEO at Nord Pool, said: “Our customers are excited about this long-anticipated extension of the shared order book into the final hour of intraday trading, finally becoming a reality. Nord Pool customers will now be able to trade right up to gate closure in key markets.”

Trade New IDAs

The new SIDC Intraday Auctions (SIDC IDAs) are now live.

We have already seen encouraging activity from Nord Pool members on the new auctions. Any member not yet set up, should request production portfolios as soon as possible.

New IDA production portfolios can be requested by contacting our support team: support@nordpoolgroup.com or via your local Nord Pool market manager.

New - Trade Volume Limits in the Auction Platform

The latest version release of Nord Pool’s auction platform has introduced a new feature for our members - ‘volume limits’.

This is a new risk management feature which allows members to define portfolio specific volume limits on each underlying delivery area for curve orders/single hourly orders. Volume limits are voluntary, but we encourage members to at least familiarize themselves with this important new feature.

Orders containing volumes that breach the set volume limits, whether placed through the UI or API, will be automatically rejected by the platform, in which case a rejection message will be delivered to the user.

Limit setting and modification are available through the Trading UI for users with trading responsible access only. Regular user accounts have access to view the Trading Limits.

New MTU for Poland

The market time unit (MTU) for energy balancing markets in Poland shifted to 15 minutes resolution earlier this month. Nord Pool member Axpo Polska Sp. z o.o was the first to take advantage of our 15-minute products on the Polish market with the new MTU.

This is an important change – Poland has a significant number of wind and PV (solar) installations in the system, with more coming online in the near future. The new 15-minute imbalance settlement periods will enhance the ability of the Transmission System Operator to balance the renewable power market more effectively.

New Look for Nord Pool

You will very likely already have noticed that Nord Pool has launched a new visual identity to align more closely with our majority owner, Euronext.

This change only impacts the Nord Pool visual identity and branding, including a fresh new logo and corporate colours. The structure and features of our trading platforms remain unaffected.

New License for Electricity Retailers

In light of the growing awareness around the use of the power spot price in everyday life, Nord Pool is taking steps to make this information more accessible.

The biggest impact is in electricity retail, with most retailers now providing digital services to track the electricity price and how it correlates to customer bills. To make this simpler, Nord Pool has introduced a new license category targeted specifically at retailers, allowing them to deliver exactly what their customers want via API.

The new license permits retailers to share data on their own non-public portal, have unlimited access to the most comprehensive data set in the industry for each country, going back almost three decades, access transparent terms and conditions covering publication and download rights – and all for a single payment, with no variable fees.

BRM Joins SIDC

Bursa Română de Mărfuri S.A. (BRM), which is serviced by Nord Pool, has become the second Nominated Electricity Market Operator in Romania having recently been integrated into the European Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC).

The integration of BRM’s trading platform into SIDC marks another important milestone towards increasing the efficiency of the single european electricity Market as it becomes more liquid and competitive.

Nord Pool CEO Tom Darell, commented: “We are delighted to see the results of a successful collaboration between Nord Pool and BRM. We will provide the business with a market leading platform while we continue working together towards a successful launch of a day-ahead market later this year.”

New Market for Iceland

Nord Pool is pleased to announce the signing of an agreement with Elma energy exchange in Iceland to cooperate on the launch of Iceland’s first short-term physical electricity trading market.

The new Elma power market will start with day-ahead trading, with intraday trading intended to follow at a later date.

Welcoming Iceland’s new power market, Tom Darell, CEO at Nord Pool said: “We are delighted to announce our success in the rigorous selection process to partner with Elma in pioneering the development of a new day-ahead trading market for Iceland. Operating an organized power market for the first time is a huge step forward for Iceland. It will bring important benefits in terms of efficiency, transparency, provision of reliable investment signals and reinforcement of security of supply.”

The market’s launch date has yet to be determined, but is expected to be in late 2024 or early 2025.

UK Market Recoupling - `No Regrets`

The UK is at a pivotal point in determining its energy future. With renewables inexorably rising in the power trading mix, it is vital that the UK remains able to deliver efficient and cost-effective energy to consumers.

The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) intends to introduce legislation which would recouple GB’s two separate day-ahead markets into one - calling this a ‘no-regrets’ solution to progressing development of cross-border arrangements and fulfilling EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement obligations.

But recoupling only the UK's day-ahead markets, without also simultaneously coupling intraday, is an awfully long way from ‘no regrets’.

Ending SFTP support

Nord Pool will be discontinuing support for SFTP/FTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) technology at the end of December 2024.

The decision to end support for this technology has been driven by industry changes and our upgrading of internal systems. A specific cutoff date will be published once we have more information on the expected timeline.

Most market data files accessible via SFTP/FTP can already be accessed through the Nord Pool Market Data API or our web-based Data Portal. Users will need to transition their subscriptions before the end of the year, to ensure continued access to our data services.

Trade the new IDAs FREE

New Intraday Auctions (IDAs) are launching on Thursday 13 June 2024 (subject to final go-live confirmation).

Nord Pool is pleased to announce that there will be no fees associated with trading on the Intraday Auctions with Nord Pool, throughout 2024 – you can trade the IDAs for free.

Members are advised to request production portfolios now, to be ready to take advantage of this fee holiday.

New IDA production portfolios can be requested by emailing: support@nordpoolgroup.com or via your local market manager. Please ensure you request production portfolios no later than Friday 24 May.

Working with Preisenergie

Nord Pool is pleased to have completed a co-operation agreement with Preisenergie GmbH, designating them an authorized reseller of the Nord Pool Electricity Retailers License in Germany.

Preisenergie provides cutting-edge pricing software for energy retailers, encompassing dynamic tariff calculation, load forecasting, marketing and billing solutions. Our collaboration ensures retailers have seamless access to Nord Pool's electricity spot market data, simplifying dynamic tariff management.

Welcoming EU Vote on Intraday Shared Order Book

Nord Pool was delighted to see the recent European Parliament vote to enact a new EU law that will finally make it possible for all European power exchanges to offer their members the same liquidity from the beginning to the end of intraday trading, in all bidding zones.

A previous loophole in EU regulation meant that, in intraday markets such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, France and The Netherlands, intraday liquidity in the final hour of trading could be ‘ringfenced’ in local markets - a power exchange had no obligation to share it with other exchanges, as is the case the rest of the time in intraday trading.

Tom Darell, CEO at Nord Pool, commented: “We are delighted that this vital and long anticipated extension of the ‘Shared Order Book’ into the final hour of intraday trading is coming to the European power market at last – delivering a more efficient, more transparent, more competitive and more innovative trading environment.”

A Pioneering Pedigree

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Nord Pool establishing the first multi-national continuous implicit intraday market in Europe, between Finland and Sweden. The new market, named Elbas, was operated in collaboration between Nord Pool and EL-EX, with support from Fingrid and Svenska Kraftnät.

Over the years Nord Pool’s Elbas market expanded across the Nordics, into the Baltics and eventually linked with the Netherlands.

Elbas was very much the blueprint and benchmark for continuously-traded domestic and cross-border intraday power in Europe, a fact that, in due course, was even recognised by EU legislators as the target for an EU-wide market.

Following the ACER decision on ‘Establishing a single methodology for pricing intraday cross-zonal capacity’, three separate intraday auctions for the single European electricity market will be in place from Thursday 13^th June 2024.

These will be accessible for Nord Pool members from go-live, through the current Nord Pool auction trading platform as used in day-ahead, with a wide range of products available. Members will be able to submit single market time unit orders (15, 30 or 60 mins depending on bidding zone) as well as block orders, including standard blocks and profile blocks.

Member testing of the auctions is now available – please contact your market manager for details. In addition, the Market Coupling Consultative Group has arranged a live online workshop, which will include discussion of the coming new intraday auctions, on Monday 26^th February.

2023 Trading Figures Announced

Nord Pool has announced its trading figures for 2023, with steady growth being seen throughout our markets.

The year saw a total of 1103.8 TWh of power traded through Nord Pool, of which day-ahead trading on our Nordic, Baltic, UK and Western and Central European markets, accounted for slightly over 1030 TWh. Intraday trading volumes for 2023 amounted to 73.6 TWh across Europe (a 95% increase on 2022 figures).

Intraday trading showed growth during 2023. Denmark witnessed a year-on-year (YoY) rise of 233%, while the Netherlands experienced a YoY increase of 248.5%. Germany and Latvia demonstrated substantial growth rates of 114% and 101% respectively.

Congratulations to Camilla

Camilla Berg, Nord Pool's General Counsel, has been elected as a member of the ACER REMIT Expert Group on wholesale energy market integrity and transparency.

The new consultative group will advise and contribute to ACER’s work on REMIT surveillance, conduct, integrity and transparency, as well as on how other EU legislation could impact energy trading and the functioning of the internal energy market.

The All NEMO Committee, representing the SDAC power exchanges, has published a public consultation on the removal of second auctions as part of the market coupling process. Nord Pool encourages all interested members to view and contribute to this consultation on future market development.

Saying "No" to MCO Switch

Nord Pool was glad to be a signatory to an open letter from the CEOs of Europe’s Nominated Electricity Market Operators, calling for the deletion of the Single Legal Entity (planned to be created to take over the power market’s Market Coupling Operator (MCO) function) from the on-going review of the European Electricity Market Design.

We feel that transferring the complex, sensitive and already proven to work MCO activity to a completely new, centralised, monopolistic and bureaucratic entity is simply not what the power market needs.

Nordic Flow-based - Go-live Update

An announcement has been made on a new go-live date for the Nordic Flow-based Market Coupling, with a projected launch of the project now pegged to October 2024.

The intended go-live of Q1 2024 was postponed in September but now, pending successful testing and technical readiness of the various parties involved, a new date has been set.

Nord Pool was delighted recently to host a delegation of senior energy officials from Malaysia, including: Dato’ Abdul Razak Abdul Majid, Chairman, Tenaga Nasional Berhad; Dato’ Hamzah Hussin, CEO, Sustainable Energy Development Authority, Malaysia; and Datuk Mohd Hisham Ab Halim, Head BD, TNB Power Generation.

A productive discussion explored a wide range of current topics in the power industry, with particular attention on interconnectors, power exchange processes and operations.

Nord Pool CEO Tom Darell commented: “At Nord Pool we are always open to sharing our experience and expertise around operating a simple, efficient and secure power system. A central question in this regard is how to successfully integrate intermittent renewable energy to drive energy transformation.”

Energy Loop Joins

We are pleased to welcome Energy Loop GmbH as the newest trading member in Nord Pool’s German day-head and intraday power markets.

Energy Loop specialises in the project planning and construction of photovoltaic parks in Germany.

DST Testing

In preparation for the forthcoming Autumn Daylight Saving Time (DST) long clock change on Sunday 29^th October, Nord Pool will facilitate member testing on Thursday 19^th October.

During the Autumn Daylight Saving Time clock change customers can place orders in 25 individual hours. We encourage customers to use this test opportunity to actively place orders and check the results to ensure they are familiar with the process.

On Thursday 19^th October we will run auctions with delivery day Sunday 29^th October in the test environment. Choose delivery date Sunday 29^th October in the auction test platform and submit your bids as usual. If you deliver bids via Excel sheets, please remember to download the template for 29^th October, which contains 25 hours.

The latest newsletter from Nord Pool's dedicated team of Market Surveillance experts examines the potential impact around regulatory compliance of demand bidding and demand flexibility.

A lack of understanding could lead market participants to commit a breach of REMIT, so our Market Surveillance team looks at what demand flexibility is and why it is important and then considers interpretation of REMIT around demand. Plus there are some suggested actions to ake to make sure orders and transactions genuinely reflect the available demand flexibility.

Improving Our Margin Model

We will soon be introducing some important improvements to our margin model, to ensure efficient and secure operations for all our members. Nord Pool will be applying a Credit Risk Adjustment Multiplier to members' total collateral call with the aim of reducing collateral calls for members found to be lower risk, according to Nord Pool’s analysis.

The intention is to better reflect the credit risk that Nord Pool takes on, while also making life simpler for members who consistently meet collateral calls and pay amounts due in a timely manner. No member should have an increased collateral call after this credit risk adjustment is implemented.

Secure FTP Protocol Coming

We are always looking to ways to provide our customers with a more secure and reliable data transfer experience. In pursuit of that goal, we will be transitioning to a secure FTP protocol on Friday 1st December 2023.

From that date the currently used FTP protocol will no longer be supported. To continue using our FTP services seamlessly, customers will need to update FTP client settings to reflect the new URL.

If you encounter any issues or have questions, our support team is ready to help via our support portal.

A Flexible Option

Flexiswitch is an initiative started by Nord Pool and the Equigy crowd balancing platform, which enables technical connectivity between the Dutch aFRR and Nord Pool’s intraday markets.

Learning to Share

It is Nord Pool’s long-held belief that shared order books, in both intraday and day-ahead timeframes, are essential to enable full and fair competition between power exchanges in Europe. The recent EC proposals on power market reform suggested market operators should share their liquidity in all timeframes until delivery. In our view, the sharing of order books should be mandatory whenever technically possible.

Nord Pool has campaigned for a shared order book in local intraday markets after cross-zonal gate closure for a very long time. It would benefit multi-NEMO competition and aid efficient integration of renewable generation.

Day-Ahead Threshold Changes

In response to some recent threshold challenges experienced in the day-ahead market, power exchanges are set to change the threshold which triggers a second auction.

New Paper Explores Clean Energy

One of the most significant actions an individual or organization can take to reduce carbon emissions and support the green energy transition, is to choose carbon-free electricity.

There is now widespread support for a shift from established Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) (‘Guarantees of Origin’ (GOs)) to a sub-hourly matching period using timestamped energy certificates. This would enable more credible green energy products and establish an important new price signal for energy storage and flexibility.

Our new joint whitepaper with Granular Energy and AFRY Management Consulting explores the application of time-stamped energy certificates (also called granular certificates or GCs) in electricity market design and their potential to accelerate the deployment of technologies delivering clean energy.

15 Minute Intraday for the Nordics

Alongside the Nordic TSOs changing the Imbalance Settlement Period in the Nordic region to 15 minutes, earlier this month, Nord Pool has introduced the opportunity to trade with 15 minute products in the affected countries (Finland, Denmark and Sweden - not Norway, due to restrictions from the local TSO).

Trading has started with intrazonal intraday products only. Trading between price areas will be possible when the TSOs implement 15 minute transmission capacity allocation for the related cross-border capacities.

Data Retention Change - Intraday UI

Nord Pool is redesigning its database to provide a more stable and efficient service. This will mean some changes to data retention for UI users (API users will retain access to all historical data).

After the change, UI users will only be able to retrieve 120 days of historical data - the change will be released in our Member Test environment during April and will be in our Production environment during Q2 2023.

If you are a UI user requiring more than 120 days historical data you can:

Switch to API usage for these use case, or
Start taking regular snapshots of your activity from UI and build a local database if needed

A Cornerstone of Energy Cooperation

We were pleased recently to see Nord Pool described as ‘a cornerstone of Nordic energy cooperation and an important factor in ensuring… sustainable and safe energy supply’ in an opinion piece by Åslaug Marie Haga, Head of Renewables Norway, the non-profit industry organisation representing about 400 companies involved in the production, distribution and trading of electricity in Norway.

Nord Pool and BRM Partner for New Romanian Exchange

Nord Pool recently announced an agreement for cooperation and system delivery with Bursa Română de Mărfuri S.A. (BRM).

Under the agreement, Nord Pool will assist BRM in its goal of becoming Romania’s representative energy exchange. Nord Pool will deliver software and consulting services to create the market systems allowing BRM to operate in the European single day-ahead and intraday markets as a Nominated Electricity Market Operator (NEMO - power exchange).

Market Reform Consultation - Our View

The European Commission recently held a consultation on its proposal for amendments to electricity market design. As Europe’s leading power market, Nord Pool provided input to the Commission’s consultation. Now we have published a white paper setting out our viewpoints.

We viewed as especially positive, suggestions for a cross-border intraday gate closure closer to real time and the suggestion that market operators should share their liquidity in all timeframes until delivery – something Nord Pool has long campaigned for!

New Trading Platform Features

We are pleased to offer two new features to Nord Pool’s trading platforms.

Firstly our new reasonability check is provided by Nord Pool in the day-ahead auction system where submitted curve orders are compared with previous trading days. Substantial deviation based on the reference day price will flag the submitted curve order, making it easier to identify erroneous bids.

A curve order that does not pass the reasonability check will be flagged and shown with a yellow bar in the Trading UI. Responsibility for submitting correct orders lies with members - unintentional errors or ignorance can be seen as market manipulation under REMIT.

Secondly, as an intraday market back-up solution for our Polish market, during planned or unplanned service breaks of the XBID platform of the Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC) process, Nord Pool will open local intraday contracts to our trading system.

This will allow our customers to continue to trade on the intraday market, within the Polish bidding zone, while waiting for XBID to come back online.

New Functionality on API

To save users of our auction API having to actively poll for results, Nord Pool has created a gRPC (high performance remote procedure call) providing a one-way streaming notification of both preliminary and final auction results.

API users can now listen for results notification and need only poll for trade results once it has been received, giving a much more event-based experience.

DST Reminder

Don’t forget there is a clock change on Sunday 26^th March. With the transition from wintertime to summertime, the clocks go forward one hour at 02:00 CET, meaning Sunday 26^th will have 23 trading hours.

Nord Pool + Equigy = Power Flexibility!

We are pleased to be partnering with European crowd balancing platform Equigy to create a new way to trade energy flexibility in the Dutch intraday power market.

The project – FlexiSwitch – aims to reduce barriers to market entry for small scale flexibility service providers, offering a structure that connects them to balancing and wholesale energy markets. This will make access to trading simpler and more efficient so they can trade easily and have the choice of where to place their flexibility.
